Abstract

Personality typologies have acquired renewed visibility through digital platforms, workplace applications, educational settings, and viral infographics that extend conventional personality classifications into increasingly granular “subtypes.” One contemporary example ranks combinations derived from Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) labels into categories ranging from “very common” to “ultra rare,” including additional suffixes that appear to extend the conventional 16-type architecture. This qualitative literature review critically examines whether contemporary personality science supports such subtype and rarity claims. Literature published predominantly between 2020 and 2026 was synthesized across six domains: MBTI psychometrics, dimensional trait models, person-centered personality profiles, cross-cultural measurement, digital personality assessment, and applied personality classification. The synthesis shows that recent evidence provides a more nuanced picture of the MBTI than either uncritical endorsement or wholesale rejection. Contemporary studies report meaningful reliability and convergent-validity evidence for established MBTI dimensions, while important questions remain concerning categorical interpretation, structural validation, temporal stability, and predictive usefulness. More importantly, reliability of an established instrument does not establish the validity of derivative subtype systems or population-rarity rankings
